Orbital – Samantha Harvey

I read this just after my rather unsatisfactory experience with George Saunder’s Vigil, purchased at the same too expensive Feltrinelli on the same visit to my parents. It was as well a book that stuck in my mind because of Bart’s review. I’ll keep this pretty brief. The book itself is short, and it wouldn’t make sense for me to bloviate too long.

…t’was good. Really good.

The writing was very good, albeit pretty dense. You will see life on a space station in more detail than you likely would have wanted. Nothing much happens in that time, and the story only take place in one day, as the space station rotates around the earth. Fascinating to me was how decontextualized these poeple became in so many ways, such as how day and night seem to lose all meaning for them. But the stand out is the writing. Harvey knows how to command a sentence, and it was a pleasure to read. I did struggle a bit, as I tend to do when things are this plotless. But I still recommend this highly.

Frankly, I have no idea. And I am happy this way.
